Phantom of the Opera.
You heard right. Emily was a music major, Shayla was a biology major. I [Emily] was humming intervals, and Shayla hummed with me. We paused, staring at each other trying to figure out how we both knew those specific intervals... and we realized that they were the introduction to "Angel of Music" from the movie version of The Phantom of the Opera.
For whatever reason, this moment bonded us together as best friends, and we are grateful that it did.
Over the course of the school year we came to realize that we had more in common than just Phantom. Much of it came down to our love of food. We loved everything about food...particularly if it involved chocolate. We also discovered that we both enjoyed tinkering with recipes to tweak them to our satisfaction.
We discovered this one day when we had a serious hankering for some brownies. So we splurged and bought a brownie mix. (Hey! We were freshmen in college living in dorms. Don't judge). We bought all the ingredients - eggs, oil, all of it. We made it home and down to the basement to bake our decadent indulgence only to realize that neither of us owned any measuring utensils. That means no measuring cups and no measuring spoons.
So we did what college students do best - GUESS! We tried our very best to eyeball all of the ingredients. Thank goodness eggs come pre-measured!!
They were the best brownies of our lives. True story.
From then on, we knew it was in our destinies to forever cook together and only use the recipe as a guideline.
This is the whole basis of this blog. We intend to share our doctored concoctions with you through our little posts. We hope they bring you as much joy and happiness as they bring to us. Though, that may not be possible as you are not actually cooking with us.
